    Here and there

With my quite regular postings at 4th Point and the popularity of Facebook, we're getting the feeling not too many people are looking us up here anymore.  If you'd like to connect with us, may we suggest you try either of those.  Of course, you're still welcome to reminisce through this site here!  -- Stanley

    Retreat

At the end of April, Monica and I enjoyed a very relaxing and rejuvenating retreat for pastors and spouses of pastors at Barnabas Family Ministries on Keat’s Island in Howe Sound.  The scenery was breathtaking, the food delicious, the accommodations luxurious, the speaker (Mark Buchanan) inspiring, and the hospitality welcoming.  If you ever have the opportunity to attend a conference at Barnabas, we highly recommend it!

    Frog eye

I'm not sure how many people are still checking this (maybe let us know if you are!).  It's been a while since we've posted anything here for a few reasons...
      ::  it takes time away from interacting with family and friends irl ("in real life");
      ::  we're behind in sorting (and posting) photos;
::  I'm now sharing reflections and thoughts over at 4thpoint.wordpress.com.

Our home computer is in the shop being repaired at the moment.  If I had it, I'd take a picture of our backyard and post it here, comparing it with this picture from one of the albums currently online:

Here you see Grandma (my mom) and Hannah on warmer days (read: last summer), and in the background, you see a frog-shaped sandbox.  Until a couple days ago, that sandbox was completely buried in snow since November.  Earlier this week, Hannah looked out the window and exclaimed, "I see the frog's eye!"  The snow is still mostly covering the sandbox (there's still over a foot of it), but a little green corner has now emerged in our white backyard.  Spring is certainly late this year, but now I'm finally starting to think that it may indeed be coming.

More pictures, including of Jacob's second birthday, will be added eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later...

    The bachelor life

    These are interesting days.

Following our vacation to the Okanagan a couple weeks ago, Hannah and I went to Abbotsford -- I had a classis meeting to go to and Hannah spent time with my parents.  When I flew home again, I left Hannah with Dad & Mom G.  A couple days later, Monica left for a conference in Grand Rapids MI.  That leaves Jacob and me home together...  We're a couple of bachelors!  (Thankfully I have lots of help with Jacob while I'm at work.)

Meanwhile, Jacob is certainly learning how to communicate more and more.  "Daddy," "Mommy," and "Hannah" have been quite clear for a while now.  He says "Please," while "Thank you" still requires a fair bit of translation.  I wonder if Jacob is going to be truck driver when he grows up because he points out every single truck he sees out his window or while we're driving.  "Big truck!" can refer to a semi, a pickup, a van, and the occasional SUV.  Today Jacob made some new friends at the Smithers CRC nursery as I was preaching there for both services.  The attendants said he had a good time, but it sure was special to see him get excited to see me arrive to pick him up afterwards.

So, we're doing quite fine, the two of us.  And we hope Monica and Hannah are having fun where they are.

But we're looking forward to next week when everyone is home again, too.

    Unbelievable

It's hard to believe how fast Hannah and Jacob are growing up and learning new things.  Jacob continues to be our adventurous climber.  He is beginning to speak, saying things like "Daddy" and "Mommy" and "Opa" and "Oma" and "Please" and "Thank you" and "Amen."  Of course, he has an older sister teaching him lots of new words.  Hannah strings together all sorts of words into some pretty unique sentences...  She likes describing Jacob's dirty diapers and whispering in our ears that she loves us.  Both of them love playing in their sandbox, but Jacob still isn't too wild about running through the sprinkler on a hot day though he loves playing with water otherwise.  Hannah would probably run through the sprinkler even on a cold day if we'd let her!  Any day the sun is out is a "hot" day, according to Hannah, worthy of getting wet outside.  Hannah will very proudly tell you that she is "two-and-three-quarters," but that she's also looking forward to having birthday cake with both sets of grandparents (what about us though?) on her third birthday.  Jacob will undoubtedly enjoy the cake, too, insisting that he eat it all by himself like he does with almost all food these days which often makes for messy (but fun) eating around our table.

Now we just need to get around to uploading some pictures of some of the above...   -- Stanley

    Things we see and hear

Stanley and I hear and see the craziest things these days!  Hannah loves to be "mom" to Jacob and we will often see her pulling Jacob off his feet to stop him from reaching something he shouldn't.  She also keeps a close eye on him as he learns to venture down the stairs.  "Feet first Jacob!" we hear as she grabs him around the waist to make sure that he doesn't go down head first.  Little does she realize that Mommy is waiting right there to help Jacob down.  Jacob however is getting larger.  He is almost 25 pounds and only 5 behind Hannah.  He shows how well he has been paying attention to Hannah's techniques as now when Hannah has a toy he would like, he tackles her and lays on top of her until he can reach it...  This often ends in Stan or me pulling him off of her and opening his firm grip on her temptingly long curly hair and mediating the dispute.  I'm pretty sure I'll be able to add some new descriptions of skills to my resume when I should decide to find a job somewhere down the road.

One thing we saw just today was Jacob sliding down the slide at the playground by himself and loving it!  The look of sheer delight and the squealing of anticipation of more is one of the best parts of being a parent.  We also realize that this year Hannah will be much more independent at the playground as she is a little taller and just last week was finally able to climb up the levels of the McDonald's Playplace by herself.  Go Hannah!

Thinking of things we hear these days, I would have to say that we agree with the statement that "kids say the darndest things!"  The other day as Hannah, Jacob and I were going to town, Hannah was a little of out sorts, so I asked her if she being grumpy.  She said, "I not grumpy, I just have freckles on my cheeks."  This next anecdote might clear that up a little.  Once again, after a nap (which has morphed into quiet time), I asked her if she was still grumpy and she responded, "I still grumpy here and here and here!"  (pointing to three different places on her cheeks).

Hannah is learning more about sharing.  She told Stanley at breakfast today, "I share Hannah's van with Daddy and I share Hannah's house with Daddy."  Stanley and I just wonder when she will begin to share toys with Jacob...

    Frozen

Living with the Bulkley River in one's backyard is not without its excitement.  Earlier this winter, Monica and I happened to look out the window at just the right moment; if we had been gone for the afternoon, we would have missed it all...

We were watching large chunks of ice floating quite fast down the river when they began to dramatically slow down and then stop altogether.  The river was all plugged up with a big buildup of ice.  Without warning, the ice at the edge of the river heaved upwards and suddenly water came pouring down into the lower part of our backyard.  What took several days to fill up during the flood of June 2007 filled up in a matter of minutes.  Monica and I looked at each other and said, "Uh, how much higher is that water going to come?"  Thankfully, it did not come high enough to submerge the upper part of our backyard.

After a few more minutes, the ice jam broke up and the chunks of ice began flowing freely down the river again.  The lower part of the backyard slowly drained and everything returned to normal.  A while later, the river was frozen over again, but I guess enough water kept flowing beneath the ice that it didn't get pushed to higher ground.

The photos, unfortunately, don't do justice to the drama of that afternoon, but we're posting a few anyway.  Enjoy...

    Only half a year later

Well, it took nearly half a year, but some pictures from Hannah's birthday are now online.  The "Fall 2007" album contains pictures from August-November.  Hopefully sometime before next June, we'll post some recent Christmas pictures!  We got some real cute ones!

Everyone is doing well as the year winds to a close.  In a week or so, we'll be entering our fourth year here in Telkwa.  It's truly amazing how time flies!  We continue to love being in this part of the world.  I continue to find my work at Telkwa CRC meaningful, and both Monica and I seldom have a dull moment around the house with the two kids.  We've got great friends who look after Hannah and Jacob once in a while so we can get away on a date with just the two of us!  A couple months ago, we finally broke down and bought a van -- a new Dodge Grand Caravan.  We probably should have gone straight from the ZX2 to a van, but, well, it took a while for me to get psyched up to being a minivan family...

Hannah is constantly learning new words, and she talks a lot!  (I can't figure out where she gets that from...)  Sometimes she surprises us with what she all says; a couple weeks ago, she said "Merry Christmas" to me, and I don't think either Monica or I had said that to her yet.  She has several favourite phrases such as, "Hannah do it!" and "Hit the road, Jack."  (Again, I can't figure out where gets that last one from...)  She's only recently been introduced to hot chocolate and it has certainly become her beverage of choice.  I think she would drink it at breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime if we allowed it.  Some of her favourite activities include going for walks, playing with friends, attending Sunday school with the big kids, watching Veggie Tales, talking on the phone, taking a bath, playing with water, blowing her nose (with sound effects from her mouth), being read to, writing, painting, and using scissors.  Not too terribly long ago, Hannah graduated from her crib to a "big girl bed," which has improved her bedtime routine and her sleeping patterns, thankfully.  She loves how Monica and I can snuggle beside her for a few minutes now at bedtime.

Jacob has learned to crawl and pull himself up on things (such as the furniture and his parents' legs).  He is also known to climb stairs.  In short, he is really getting around now and is finding his way into everything!  He's finally growing some hair, but it's kinda at a funny stage right now.  Currently he has five teeth -- three on top, two on bottom.  For fun, Jacob plays with Lego and blocks, takes baths, jumps in his Jumperoo, sleeps, and watches Veggie Tales with Hannah.  He continues to receive lots (and lots and lots) of hugs and kisses from Hannah, who also likes showing Jacob how to do things.  Jacob still naps twice a day, and, on good days, his and Hannah's afternoon naps are synchronized, making for a quiet hour or so.

It's really quite amazing how fast Hannah and Jacob are growing.  It is fun watching them develop and learn new things.  There have been lots of changes over the past few months.  Monica and I have indeed been blessed, and we're looking forward to what 2008 holds for our family.

    Long-awaited update

Well, Monica and I have finally uploaded a bunch (a schwack, really) of new pics of our family as well as of the recent flooding of the Bulkley River.  It took us longer to accomplish this feat primarily because of two reasons: The Inverse Law of Usenet Bandwidth and a mildly addicting little internet phenomenon known as Facebook.  See you online...  unless, of course, something interesting is happening!   -- Stanley

    A boost for Hannah

Hannah recently decided that she no longer likes sitting in her high chair.  So she has graduated from to a booster seat at the table, which she loves.  She is getting so big!

In other news, you can catch a couple guys from Telkwa CRC skiing and snowboarding on YouTube.  You'll see Luke Fokkens in "Rayz Rail Jam" (look for his name in the bottom left corner; you might want to mute the Young Jeezy soundtrack).  He says he came in second place doing the jib jam.  I'm not really sure what that means, but it sounds fun.  Luke's brother Bryan is in the video called "Rayz Park 4."  -- Stanley

PS: Keep checking the "Jacob's Arrival" photo album...  there are a couple new pictures in there now and we'll try to add more soon!

    February 17

    Hello Jacob!

On Thursday (15 Feb), we welcomed Jacob Hendrik Groothof into the world!  He was born at 9:17pm (PT) at Bulkley Valley District Hospital in Smithers, weighing in at 3650 g (just over 8 lbs).  Jacob was very excited about entering the world: We arrived at the hospital at 7:30pm and he was born less than two hours later!  His big sister, Hannah (1½ years old now), was glad to meet him the next morning and has already showered him with kisses.

Like with Hannah, Jacob’s name echoes of other people in our family trees.  He is named after Stan’s mom’s late mother, Jacoba; Monica’s dad’s late mother, Hendrika; and Stan’s dad, Henry.  Both his first and middle name (or variations thereof) appear elsewhere here and there in our family trees, as well.

We thank God for Jacob’s safe arrival and that he is a very healthy baby boy.  Jacob and Monica are doing so well that they are already home from the hospital – less than 24 hours later!   -- Stanley

Speaking Italian and other new things

In addition to "Da!" (short for "Daddy"), Hannah has been saying "Mama," but it sounds more like "MAA-ma!"  It's like she's Italian or something!

We add that to a whole pile of new things Hannah has been learning lately...
she knows what a train, a lamb, a cow, a chicken, a duck, a dog, and (our favourite) a pig all say
she says a few words like "light" and "coffee" (the little addict!)
she uses sign language to say "more," "please," and "thank you"
she builds (and demolishes) towers out of blocks
she puts on her boots (though sometimes on her hands)
she brings us things when we ask for them (when she wants to!)
she turns on the TV and Monica's clock radio, cranking up the volume
she helps set the table (in her own unique way!)
she speed-dials Stan's office number on the phone (soon there'll be phone calls to China on our phone bill!)
she (repeatedly) launches the calculator on Stan's computer at work
she sits fairly still and quiet for the opening part of worship before going down to the nursery
she climbs onto furniture (check out the movie we posted)

That's our big girl!  And she'll only seem bigger when Baby #2 arrives, hopefully any day now...

    December 25

    A Christmas gift

These past couple of weeks have been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for us.

It started when Monica went to the clinic for a scheduled appointment.  Our doctor was on vacation, so she saw another doctor who figured Monica knew about the posssibility of our baby having spina bifida.  Monica had no idea what he was talking about!  It turns out that the ultrasound done last month revealed a possible defect in our baby's spine that could result in paralysis and other health issues upon birth.  Naturally, we were upset and worried about the health of our baby.

When our doctor returned, he phoned Monica to assure her that things were not as bad as we were fearing, though he still wanted the baby's spine more closely examined.  So he scheduled for Monica to have a more detailed ultrasound using equipment at the hospital in Smithers and a video conference call with a specialist at BC Women's Hospital in Vancouver.  This appointment was a few days ago.  The specialist was very helpful and carefully explained the source of the concern:  Essentially, the distance across the lower vertebrae of the baby's spine is wider than normal.  However, the more detailed ultrasound revealed that though it is wider than average, it is still within a healthy range.  A slight possibility (about a 1% chance) still remains that our baby may have a form of spina bifida (occulta); if he or she does, it would likely be very mild -- either not noticeable or otherwise correctable with surgery.

Naturally, we were overjoyed with this news.  It's not that we would have loved this baby any less; I guess we just had worries and concerns about what this would mean... whether it was our fault (like we had lousy DNA or something), and whether we would have what it takes to raise this special little boy or girl.  So, yeah, we were anxious.  But we are also very aware of how God answered our prayers for health for our little baby.  There were many people praying for our little one!  I think Monica and I are beginning to realize that this was another good reminder to worry less and trust God more.

The past couple of days we've been saying that a healthy baby really makes for a wonderful Christmas gift!  We continue to eagerly await his or her arrival in February...  maybe even a wee bit earlier than originally planned according to the ultrasound last week!  =)

May God bless you this season, too.   -- Stanley

    November 30

    Something new everyday

In the past month, it seems that Hannah has conquered many new things which we thought might be kind of fun to sum up here:

using sign language to say “please,” “thank you” and “more” (usually when she’s eating!)
dancing to her music, our singing and some little ditties from her toys
        climbing up stairs
climbing down stairs (still a little bumpy there!)
eating many things on her own (although soup is a little messy that way!)
“reading” the devotional after supper when we are done (and sometimes before we’re done reading!)
        talking on the “phone”
(we loosely define phone as any item that is similar in shape or, if there is nothing like that around, her fist by her face will do too!)
        starting to put together puzzles
putting the shapes in the Tupperware shape ball (with a little help finding the right hole)
listening carefully for the whistle when she hears the train (thanks Opa!)
making “wooo, wooo” sounds when she hears the train
making “woof, woof” sounds when she sees a dog
pointing out animals in books when we’re reading
bringing us items we ask her for (only when she wants to, of course!)
        trying to "smell" flowers
giving us many kisses and hugs

It’s been fun seeing all these new things take place and I’m sure we’ll have much more to look forward to.

It should be interesting to see how she likes the Christmas tree when it goes up this week and what she'll think of the lights and presents.  Our tree might need a 3-foot section along the bottom with the unbreakable ornaments on it and all the glass ones up top!  Can’t wait to see what she’ll surprise us with then…   -- Monica

    Renovations

When my parents came to visit just before Thanksgiving, we thought we'd recruit them into helping us get Hannah's room painted and ready for Hannah and Baby #2 to share.  However, as all renovations go it seems, things don't always work out as easy as you expect.  After finding mould and removing gyproc and then sealing things back up again and placing new gyproc in (mostly done by Dad V), we had run out of time for Dad and Mom to actually help us finish the room.  So, with the help of many others, the room was remodelled, and yesterday all of Hannah's things made their way back into her room.  She is loving it, as are Stan and I.  Below are a couple pictures of her room and a couple closeups of the Pooh border.

A friend of ours said to us to today "We make plans, but life happens."  How true!  This endeavour just proves that statement.  We are very glad that we are finished now though and to have more space in the rest of our home.  Hannah, too, is glad to have her space back in her room to play in again.  It's great for all of us!   -- Monica

    Arrivals

It's almost unbelievable the number of people we know who are giving birth to babies or adopting babies.  Including Monica, there are at least 6 expecting women that we know in Telkwa alone.  There must be something in the water!  We can also think of friends on Vancouver Island and in Prince George, Calgary and Grand Rapids who've told us they're expecting.

Speaking of Grand Rapids, congratulations to our friends there Craig & Janene with the recent arrival of Ryne Isaac!  They've posted some pictures at Shutterfly here.  And congratulations to our Edmonton friends Mike & Christina with last week's arrival of Rachel Lynne!  They've also posted some pictures online here.

We also know a few people who are looking into adopting a child, including Aaron & Nicole who are eagerly awaiting Judah's arrival to North America from Ethiopia.  You can check out updates here.

    New stuff, new life

    Hey family and friends,

I've just uploaded some new content to our space.  Monica typed up her popular Canadian Potato Salad recipe.  You can find it in the reciple section below along with Royal Raspberry Cake, which has also been a favourite of numerous guests lately.  And there are 3 new sermons in the sermons section.  I'm particularly happy with my Pentecost sermon about Elijah and Elisha based on 2 Kings 2:1-22.  If you get around to reading any of them, feel free to leave a comment with what you think!

And, yes, the rumours are true...  Monica and I are expecting again.  No, not a package from Canada Post!  Another little Groothof is due to enter the world on Valentine's Day 2007!
